Australian Members Of AmQHA
Form New Quarter Horse Association

15th May 2008: A general meeting of Australian members of the American Quarter Horse Association (AmQHA) held in Brisbane on Saturday 5th April 2008 voted overwhelmingly to form a new Quarter Horse association.

The group will begin promoting AmQHA membership, events and activities in Australia over the coming year, heralding an exciting new age for local horse owners and breeders.

One of the new Association's first activities - once it's adopted a constitution - will be to offer a $10,000 purse in the NHCA Non-pro Futurity in 2009 for the highest placed American registered Quarter Horses.

DNA Testing: Why The
ACCC Is Investigating AusQHA

17th March 2008: In the March 2008 edition of the Australian Quarter Horse Journal an open letter from President of the Australian Quarter Horse Association (AusQHA) was printed on page 65.

We believe that this letter contained several misrepresentations about International Quarter Horse Services Pty Ltd and the investigation that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is currently conducting into the Australian Quarter Horse Association.

For the record, we can state that we asked the ACCC to investigate AusQHA's practices regarding DNA testing on behalf of Australian Quarter Horse owners. We believe that if Australian Quarter Horse owners pay for DNA testing they should own the results of those tests - not the AusQHA. We also believe that those owners should be able to do what they like with their test results.

AmQHA Australian Members General Meeting: Saturday 5th April 2008
31st January 2008: At the request of AmQHA members, a general meeting has been called to discuss the future development and promotion of the American Quarter Horse in Australia.

This general meeting will be held on the 5th of April 2008 at the Quality Hotel Airport International, 528 Kingsford Smith Drive, Hamilton (just 10 minutes from the Brisbane airport) at 2:00pm sharp. All current AmQHA members are welcome to attend. Attendance RSVP's and agenda items can be submitted by March 17 by contacting IQHS on (07) 4667-0385 or by email

A variety of positive issues will be discussed at the meeting including a report on the AmQHA Convention held in San Francisco from the 1st-4th on March, a future AmQHA Australian Convention, AmQHA affiliated shows and classes, building a stronger relationship with the AmQHA, and other interesting topics. This is your opportunity to have an input into our growing industry!

Further information will be forthcoming in the following weeks. Don't miss out on being involved - RSVP your name, contact details and AmQHA membership number to IQHS. You can also get a flyer about the meeting in PDF format by clicking here

HERDA Hysteria Unwarranted
1st September 2007: While the equine flu epidemic has been grabbing headlines in the mainstream media over the last few weeks, Australian quarter horse owners have also been very worried about the genetic disease HERDA.

A recently-developed genetic test for HERDA seems to have sparked the panic. But we think it's largely unwarranted. And since the disease affects horses all around the world (including the USA) we also think it's highly unlikely that any horses which carry the HERDA gene will be deregistered.

Many top Australian breeders agree! And you can read our full analysis of why we think HERDA may ultimately turn out to be a storm in a teacup by clicking here (15K PDF)

AmQHA supports Victorian Racing!!!
28th August 2007: The VRQHA (Victorian Racing Quarter Horse Association) have announced that it will receive major support and assistance from AmQHA to develop the Australian Quarter Horse Racing industry in that State in particular and Australia in general.

AmQHA's initial support will be financial, allowing the VRQHA to present a strong season in 2008. Other links and supports will be discussed in November when the VRQHA meet with AmQHA officials.

The VRQHA plan to hold 10 races next season with the plans to expand this to 20 per season in the not too distant future. This is a huge step in the right direction for the Australian Quarter Horse industry and the implications stretch much further than just racing!

Naturally, IQHS fully support these moves. And over the next few weeks we'll be meeting with key players to discuss expansion of this format and program into Queensland and further afield ASAP!

You can get a copy of the press release we issued about this today in Adobe PDF format by clicking here.

Australian Quarter Horses
Missing Out On International Markets

19th June 2007: Australian quarter horse owners and breeders are missing out on huge, fast-growing international markets because we're one of only two nations in the world to run our own Stud Book (the other is Brazil). 34 other countries around the globe use the AmQHA Stud Book instead. And horses registered in that Stud Book are quickly monopolising the international trade in Quarter Horses - including the booming markets of Asia right on our doorstep! You can read a thought-provoking 4-page article about this from Australian Performance Horse magazine by clicking here (350K PDF)

We Launch IQHS!
11th June 2007: We were very proud to launch IQHS and our new web site today to help bring the benefits of the American Quarter Horse Association to Australia. For the first time ever, Australian quarter horse owners and breeders can now join AmQHA, register their horses with AmQHA and even join the exciting AmQHA Incentive Fund without needing to deal with the USA or dabble in foreign currency. You can now do it all through us, pay in Aussie dollars and get help straight over the phone. We launched IQHS with a full-page ad in the June issue Australian Performance Horse magazine and you can see a copy of it in Adobe PDF format by clicking here (360K)
